On the same day the report was published, global political and technology leaders announced the formation of the AI for Good Global Commission — a new body intended to address AI development amid rising concern over its risks. The commission will be co-chaired by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, according to a strategic overview document published on the commission’s website. ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin will serve as permanent vice-chair, and additional UN agencies are expected to participate. Whether the commission will carry any binding authority has not been disclosed.

The productivity question remains conspicuously open. The panel acknowledged that while AI could deliver significant economic benefits, it remains unclear whether productivity gains will translate into broader growth or alter employment patterns. That uncertainty is not new — but its endorsement by a 40-member scientific panel with UN backing gives it fresh institutional weight. Business leaders seeking concrete frameworks for generating measurable AI returns are operating, by the panel’s own account, in an environment where the macro-level evidence base is still being constructed.

The Implications That Matter
