OpenAI introduces the AI browser Atlas

Google Chrome’s hegemony was directly challenged on Tuesday when OpenAI debuted ChatGPT Atlas, a long-awaited AI-powered web browser based on its well-liked chatbot.

As it continues to delve further into users’ online lives by gathering information about their browser habits, the launch is OpenAI’s most recent attempt to use the 800 million weekly active ChatGPT users. The battle between OpenAI and Google may heat up as users increasingly rely on conversational tools that synthesize information rather than Google’s conventional keyword-based results, perhaps hastening a wider move toward AI-driven search.

The Chrome browser’s parent company, Alphabet, saw a 1.8% decline in share price during afternoon trade.

As businesses compete to incorporate features that can summarize sites, complete forms, and generate code in order to draw customers, it is the newest addition to a crowded market of AI browsers that also includes Perplexity’s Comet, Brave Browser, and Opera’s Neon.

Atlas enables users to evaluate data from any website, compare items, and summarize material by opening a ChatGPT sidebar in any window. When in “agent mode,” which is now accessible to paying customers, ChatGPT may communicate with websites on their behalf, carrying out activities like vacation planning and research from beginning to end.

OpenAI engineers demonstrated in a demonstration on Tuesday how ChatGPT could automatically buy all the ingredients after finding a recipe online. It took the agent several minutes to get to the Instacart website and add the required groceries to the cart.

The browser is now accessible on Apple’s macOS platform worldwide. Later, versions for iOS, Android, and Windows will be made available.

With the introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022, OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, completely changed the tech sector. Since its early success, the business has been looking for new growth opportunities and has faced fierce competition from Google and upstart Anthropic.

Since the launch of ChatGPT, Google has been working to adjust to changing search behaviors. Every Google search result can now provide an AI overview, or AI Mode, in addition to standard links, depending on the question, providing a chatbot-like experience. Google wants to roll out its Gemini AI model to the iOS Chrome app after integrating it into Chrome for US users last month.

Google prevailed when a federal court decided in September that the company would not be required to sell the Chrome browser. According to Judge Amit Mehta, Google can keep paying partners to advertise its search engine because conventional search is now in danger because to significant investments in generative AI made by both Big Tech and startups.

With a 71.9% market share in the worldwide browser industry as of September, according to StatCounter, Google Chrome has maintained its supremacy despite growing competition. However, experts warn that a new OpenAI browser would bring in new rivals for advertising spending.

“OpenAI has not yet begun selling advertisements, but integrating conversation into a browser is a step in that direction. Gil Luria, an analyst at D.A. Davidson, stated that if OpenAI begins selling advertisements, it may displace Google, which now holds around 90% of the search advertising market.
