Artificial general intelligence (AGI): what is it? The answer is getting harder to respond, though, since leading AI labs are making important advances in the constantly changing field. I feel that every time the phrase is used in a conversation, a new definition is given.
While industry heavyweights like Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman aim to use the technology to produce self-replication and real-world effect, emerging AI firms appear to be focused on reaching the desired AGI standard.
The multibillion-dollar deal between Microsoft and OpenAI was detailed in a paper earlier this year, which described AGI as a potent system capable of making up to $100 billion in revenue. However, artificial general intelligence (AGI) is commonly understood to be a system that uses AI to outperform humans in a variety of activities.
According to Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, artificial general intelligence (AGI) may be developed in the next ten years, but he is concerned that society isn’t prepared for all it would entail. According to the executive, the prospects keep him up at night.
More recently, in an interview with David Deutsch, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggested a test for the future to identify true AGI.
Sam Altman offered a potential AGI test: if a model like “GPT-8” solved quantum gravity and could describe how it was discovered, would it be considered AGI?David Deutsch agreed that it would qualify as AGI, making it a possible benchmark image.
According to Sam Altman:
“I agree with you when you bring up Einstein and general relativity. That is, in my opinion, one of the most exquisite things that humanity has ever discovered. I may even say that number one. In a few years, GPT-8 could be able to explain how it solved quantum gravity, the issues it considered, and the reasons behind its decision, but it would still only appear to be a language model output. In reality, though, it solved the problem.”
According to British physicist David Deutsch, the new standard will serve as a conclusive test for artificial general intelligence. However, there are several issues with Altman’s idea.
GPT-8 may be able to understand quantum gravity, but it doesn’t imply it will be an expert in many other areas. It would therefore be challenging for GPT-8 to qualify as AGI.
However, the CEO of OpenAI has stated that new software and hardware are required because current systems were not built for an AI-driven future. This comes after he earlier stated that the revolution will not require new technology.
