How a woman lost $300,000 in Cryptocurrency scam

Cryptocurrency fraud is on the rise today. Several cases of crypto fraud have been reported online. Most recently, Ahmedabad traders were scammed from Rs 1,25,000 when they were tricked into investing in cryptocurrencies with the promise that individuals would make double profits. More than 2,000 crypto investors have reportedly been scammed from Rs 40 Cr. The woman lost $ 3,00,000 after her scammer tricked her into investing in her money in cryptocurrency.

Tennessee social media producer Niki Hutchinson has downloaded a dating app called Hinge. Through this application, she met a man named Hao. The two exchanged messages for over a month, after which she became another victim of a scammer.

He first won her trust and encouraged her to invest in cryptocurrencies when she learned that she inherited nearly $300,000 from selling her childhood home after her mother’s death. According to screenshots released by The New York Times, her scammer said she wanted to teach her how to invest in her cryptocurrency, which she said would “generate her extra income.”

Later, she agreed and despatched a small quantity of crypto to the address which he had given to her. The scammer conned her with the aid of saying that the account she has been sending cash is affiliated with a crypto alternate referred to as ICAC. When she found out there was money on this site, she started investing more with Hao’s help. She was amazed at how easy it was to make her money quickly. Later, she spent all her savings on crypto trading platforms.

In December 2021, Hutchinson became suspicious because he was unable to withdraw funds from his account. An ICAC customer service representative told her that her account was frozen and she had to pay thousands of dollars in taxes first. Hao disappeared afterwards, according to a report released by the NYT. She is currently tracking the scammers in collaboration with local Florida police.

Hutchinson claimed she didn’t expect her money to be regained, but she wants people to be careful when someone says they can help them invest in cryptocurrencies. I heard all these stories about people becoming millionaires. I felt like cryptocurrencies are a new trend, so I have to get involved, she told the NYT.
