Elon Musk was secretly developing his own AI system while publicly urging to “pause giant AI experiments” earlier this year, a new investigation claims.
According to the report, Musk was working on xAI at the time he and more than 1,000 other people, including AI professionals, signed an open letter calling for a 6-month moratorium on AI development.

He was reportedly working on an AI project at approximately the same time using Twitter’s computing resources, according to an earlier claim.
Musk was allegedly stealing employees from rival companies during this time, including OpenAI, which he cofounded before resigning from its board in 2018. He was also reportedly in contact with executives at Nvidia, a major supplier of AI chips, according to the magazine, which cited a source with knowledge of the conversation.
In the same month that the letter was distributed, Musk also registered xAI.
A month after the open letter was published, in April, there were rumours that Musk had contacted some AI experts about starting a prospective new lab and was in discussions with Tesla and SpaceX investors about funding the initiative.
Soon after, Musk made it official that he intended to create what he called “TruthGPT,” which he defined as a highly truth-seeking AI that seeks to comprehend the nature of the cosmos.
According to the organization’s website, Musk announced the creation of xAI in July. Its lofty goal is to comprehend the true nature of the universe.
