The Thai Tourism Authority is considering issuing a cryptocurrency to visitors, the Bangkok Post reported.
The TAT is discussing the currency with the regulator, its governor Yuthasak Supasorn told the newspaper.
Crypto and vacation are two things that have been going hand in hand lately.
Thailand’s tourism authority is seriously considering introducing a digital token to capitalize on the tourism world’s growing interest in cryptocurrencies, the Bangkok Post reported on Wednesday.
Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of Thailand’s Tourism Authority, told the newspaper that the TAT was discussing the coin with the country’s Securities and Exchange Commission, which oversees capital markets, which includes transferring coupons to digital tokens.
According to the report, the TAT-Coin is listed along with other digital assets on Bitkub, a local cryptocurrency exchange. Non-fungible tokens or unique digital NFT collectibles will be offered on the exchange.
The tourism organization, which is under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, wants to spark interest in cryptocurrencies in the travel community. Companies such as airfare website Cheapair.com, Latvian carrier Air Baltic, and space travel company Virgin Galactic accept bitcoin, while many others get on this boat.
TAT was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Insider.
“We have to prepare digital infrastructure and digital literacy for our tourism operators in order to commence crypto-tourism, as the traditional business model might not be able to keep up with the new changes,” Yuthasak told the Bangkok Post.
NFTs were banned in Thailand in June for lack of “substance”. The Thai regulator hopes to strengthen supervision of commercial digital asset operators and improve quality and investor protection in this area, according to an August statement.
