Starbucks Taps Polygon for Its Web3 Experience

Starbucks Coffee Company is partnering with Polygon to provide blockchain technology for its recently announced Web3 experience, Starbucks Odyssey.

As a result of the partnership, this new Web3-based experience will allow Starbucks Rewards members and Starbucks partners (employees) in the United States to acquire and purchase collectible digital stamps in the form of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). This unique loyalty program experience is made possible by Polygon’s PoS network at low cost and high transaction speed.

Web3 experience for a reason

With the introduction of Web3 technology, Starbucks is enabling immersive coffee experiences by engaging with Starbucks Rewards members in exciting new ways, from unique product and artist collaborations to exclusive invitations to events.

Customers and partners will join the waiting list and be the first to access the Starbucks Odyssey experience, which will launch later this year. Building the Starbucks Odyssey using technology that aligns with our sustainability ambitions and promises is our top priority. The company took a very careful and cautious approach to evaluating which blockchain to use, and Polygon’s fast, affordable and carbon-neutral network is the perfect foundation for their first digital community.

Designed with long-term sustainability in mind

Polygon has committed to being carbon negative by the end of the year and has already offset the accumulated carbon debt of its network. The Ethereum chain is moving to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism that will further reduce the carbon footprint of Polygon PoS by 99.91%. Polygon PoS has been at the heart of some of the most important Web3 projects, including DeFi protocols such as Aave, Uniswap V3, NFT marketplace OpenSea, and Lazy.com. The network’s technical capabilities, thriving ecosystem and team commitment to sustainability are also reasons why companies like Adobe, Stripe, and Dolce Gabbana have chosen Polygon as their default Web3 gateway. Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, said: “Polygon was a natural choice for Starbucks, as both companies place a strong emphasis on diversity, accessibility and sustainability. As a leading provider of infrastructure that enables people and technology to freely collaborate and exchange value around the world, Polygon provides an ideal startup a platform for Starbucks to enter Web3.”
