As part of the second phase of the Mumbai surveillance plan, the Maharashtra government will set up facial recognition cameras using artificial intelligence (AI) to assist reduce street crime in Mumbai, according to a statement from deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday.
On the eve of the 14th anniversary of the Mumbai terror attack, Fadnavis stated that the state administration he led in 2014 deployed CCTVs across the whole city of Mumbai within a year as part of executing a suggestion in a report provided to the government after the 26/11 terror attack.
Mumbai is a fearless city right now. There haven’t been any terrorist attacks in Mumbai in the previous eight years. In addition, there has been a significant crackdown on organized crime’s use of extortion, Fadnavis stated at a South Mumbai Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh event.
26/11 is a wound that cannot be healed and a stain that cannot be cleansed, according to Fadnavis.
Soft diplomacy is ineffective in preventing terrorist attacks. The governments condemned terrorist actions and denounced them harshly. This is unsuccessful. In addition to reaffirming his government’s determination to prevent a repeat of 26/11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared, You attack us, and we will enter your houses and attack you. This distinguishes Mumbai from other cities, according to Fadnavis.
Regarding the 2008 terror assault, Fadnavis lamented the lack of coordination between intelligence agencies and claimed that despite intelligence input regarding the attack, they failed to act. The government received a report containing these conclusions, but the government allegedly tried to hide it.
According to the deputy CM, the governments at the time failed to adopt the report’s recommendations. When he was given the opportunity to be the CM, he executed the report in 2014. They started implementing proposals like CCTV surveillance of the city, colour coding of vessels for identification at sea, and the ‘Sagar Kavach’ drill for defence,” Fadnavis said.
