New analysis from the code-sharing platform GitHub has shown that India has also eclipsed the United States when it comes to writing AI code. The new analysis conducted by the OECD of data from Microsoft-owned code-sharing platform GitHub reveals another contender in the AI race: India, which has succeeded in equipping its vast technological talent base with artificial intelligence skills.
Data is collected from AI-related code repositories or public repositories hosted on the platform. Examination of the location from which contributions, or “pledges” are made to these AI repositories, reveals that in 2019 India overtook the United States as the primary source of code related to AI.
In 2020 it accounted for 30% of all engagements, twice as much as in the US. Chinese developers may also be underrepresented on GitHub (the country launched its own equivalent last year), but they’re not lacking, the OECD says.
This also reflects an impetus initiated by the country’s IT service companies to improve India’s vast tech talent base. Recent developments in the Indian economy mean they won’t be the only ones to benefit.
We always speak of the two main players, but India comes in third, so maybe it is time to turn our attention in that direction as well. The data suggest India’s artificial intelligence capabilities have been underestimated, said Luis Aranda, AI policy analyst at the OECD.
CSET analysis shows that four US artificial intelligence companies (Facebook, Google, Microsoft and IBM) have five artificial intelligence laboratories All five based in India are involved in the experimental development of artificial intelligence solutions.
Husan Chahal, a research analyst at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), said, There are issues with the graduate talent base and the supercomputers needed for high-level research on artificial intelligence, but related on the economic value [of artificial intelligence], and who does the work, India plays a very important role. ”
The IT service industry is no longer the only career for IT talent from India providers by leaps and bounds, from 10-15% (annual fluctuation) to 30% or sometimes 50%
