As artificial intelligence (AI) technology gains prominence around the world, reports claim that China has developed an AI “prosecutor” who can prosecute people using cutting-edge technology.
According to Chinese investigators, the AI ”prosecutor” can use a verbal description to bring charges against a defendant with greater than 97% accuracy.
The machine was reportedly built by Shanghai Pudong Prosecutor’s Office, and in an article published by Chinese researchers, they said artificial intelligence technology can help reduce the workload of prosecutors and replace prosecutors in the decision-making process in some cases.
The new technology could be used on a desktop computer while analyzing billions of data stored on its system. The AI machine is said to have been trained using thousands of cases between 2015 and 2020. It could detect dangerous driving, credit card fraud, gambling operations, including theft and fraud with updates that can be entered into the system by researchers.
However, some prosecutors are wary of the new technology. They say the “AI lawyer” could make a mistake in complicated cases. Moreover, the fact that he was trained in previous cases would make him unreliable in new cases in a constantly changing social environment.
British MI6 chief Richard Moore recently said that Chinese intelligence agencies are very capable and continue to conduct large-scale espionage operations against UK and our allies.
Moore had expressed concern about the Chinese government’s attempt to “distort public discourse” and “skew political decision-making around the world,” noting that “opponents invest money and ambition in the supremacy of artificial intelligence and quantum computers.
