According to recent data released Thursday, the majority of Americans are concerned about how artificial intelligence will impact the workforce over the next 20 years.
More than half (62%) of people surveyed in the Pew Research survey agreed that AI will have a major impact on jobholders over the next 20 years, yet only 28% said the technology will personally touch them.
About half of those surveyed think their personal impact will be minimal or nonexistent.
In general, people polled do continue to be wary of the cutting-edge technologies.
An overwhelming 71% of respondents were opposed to the idea of employing AI to make the ultimate recruiting decision for jobs, while only 7% were in favour. When AI systems were used to decide who to fire, the results were similar. When it came to recruiting, however, the findings were virtually evenly divided, with 47% of respondents thinking AI will evaluate all job applications equally better than humans.
66% of respondents said they would not consider applying for a job if they knew AI would be heavily involved in the selection process.
Only 39% of polled Americans claim to have at least heard about AI being used in recruiting procedures, and 61% claim to have heard nothing at all on the subject.
The majority of people surveyed oppose the idea of using AI to follow or monitor employees’ whereabouts during working hours, according to the poll.
A different survey by Pew Research earlier this year revealed that the majority of Americans were “uncomfortable” with receiving medical treatment utilizing AI technology.
