Amazon developing ChatGPT competitor

According to the report, Amazon is working on a consumer-focused AI chatbot that could be unveiled later this year and compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Code-named “Metis,” the chatbot service would be accessible through a web browser and run on a novel core model, which referenced records and sources.

With this move, Amazon would join a growing number of tech companies and startups that are introducing new AI assistants, such as Microsoft, Google, and Anthropic, which is backed by Amazon, among many others.

Amazon recently announced that it would be releasing “Remarkable Alexa,” an upgraded version of its voice assistant that will include a premium tier. According to the report, Metis and Remarkable Alexa share certain infrastructure.

According to Bank of America analysts, if 10% of Alexa’s active users decide to discontinue their use, Amazon might make an extra $600 million in sales through the paid tier.

Amazon debuted “Amazon Q,” a generative AI-powered assistant designed for business use, last year. In February, the company unveiled Rufus, a brand-new AI shopping assistant.

Over the past year, Amazon has worked to dispel the notion that it has lagged behind in the race for artificial intelligence (AI) technology by showcasing the generative AI momentum in Amazon Web Services and throughout the company.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, who is purportedly closely associated with “Metis,” has previously elaborated on a three-pronged AI approach that encompasses empowering customers to generate novel AI foundation models, assisting them in utilizing pre-existing foundation models, and developing AI applications.
