Over 150,000 lives are lost each year in vehicle accidents on Indian roads, literally drawing blood. Every year, approximately 450,000 vehicle accidents are reported in the country, with the state of Kerala contributing its fair share. The central government has directed the state to reduce road accidents by half by reducing speeding through the use of real-time camera tracking technology.
Every year, nearly 4,000 people are killed and over 40,000 are injured in vehicle accidents in Kerala.
Important roads in Kerala are being subjected to the scrutiny of artificial intelligence-based cameras, to cut road accidents in half within two years.
Traffic rules, according to safety experts, could be enforced more effectively once software that automatically evaluates violations and imposes fines becomes available. The footage will be sent directly to the central government’s server once the violation is captured on camera.
The vehicle owner will receive an SMS from the central server informing them of the fine that will be remitted for the violation, and the data will also be conveyed to the special court concurrently.
This limits the ability to persuade authorities to waive the penalty.
The main causes of accidents on Kerala roads are excessive speed and overspeeding. Despite changes to the speed limits on the national highway and other major roads in 2018, Kerala continues to adhere to the speed limits notified in the 2014 order. The speed limit for all vehicles close to schools is 30 km/h.
