AI bot will reportedly defend a human in court

In February, it’s said that history will be made when an AI bot advises the defendant in court for the first time.

The hearing is scheduled to occur some time in the next month, but neither the court’s location nor the identity of the defendant are being made public by the robot lawyer’s creators.

Sally Hobson, a barrister at a law business with offices in London, is one such attorney who recently used an AI in a challenging murder trial. Over 10,000 documents were analysed for the case. The task was completed four weeks quicker by the software than by humans, saving about £50,000. Eleanor Weaver, the chief executive of Luminance, created the software. Since Luminance is available in 80 different languages, it is used by more than 300 law firms in 55 different nations.

Although there are currently no reports of lawful AI bots acting in an unanticipated way, such behaviour or errors could happen in the future. Additionally, since AI bots cannot be sued, determining liability and compensation is complicated.
